Abstract

The road traffic is considered one of the sources of vibration that most impacts buildings in urban space. These impacts are transmitted to buildings through the ground and can generate both structural buildings damage and human discomfort. Heritage buildings have great historical, artistic and cultural value and evidences the urban and architectural evolution of the cities. In Brazil, there is still no regulation that governs such activity and these impacts on historic buildings, and there are few studies focused on this theme. Nationwide reference values of PVP (Peak Particle Velocity) are used, recommended in international standards. The PVP (mm/s) is considered the best answer to evaluate the occurrence of vibration-induced damage. The current paper presentes the state of art on the topic carried out from the first half of the 20th century and an internacional normative panorama in the last 50 years. According to the rules presented we can see that are huge the PVP variation limits for historic buildings, between 0,15 and 50,0 mm/s. For the categorization of normative limits will be presented evaluations of frequency bands, type of excitation and building.
