Abstract

School environments in Brazil suffer from an endemic problem of lack of acoustic treatment, which significantly hinders the teaching process. Solutions to this are often affordable and implementable, especially if these issues are considered at the design stage. Aiming to contribute to the improvement of the acoustic quality of schools in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, this work aims to evaluate the acoustic quality of the Ivani Machado Bezerra State School and propose guidelines for the improvement of the acoustic comfort specifications of the manual “Padrões Referenciais de Funcionamento da Escola” (document under development by the State Department of Education, Culture, Sport and Leisure), which guided the project of the analyzed building. For this, the methodological procedures consisted of collecting data about the school and its environments, measuring speech intelligibility parameters (reverberation time, initial decay time, speech transmission index, signal-to-noise ratio, among others) and specific environments, and qualitative analysis of school design decisions and manual content based on scientific literature. The study indicated that the acoustic treatment of the rooms and the guidelines of the manual are below the standards referenced in different technical sources. Design guidelines were suggested for the reference standards document, so that future schools can be built and existing schools can be renovated in a way that meets the acoustic needs of activities in the school environment.
